The Vrontochion Monastery served in some way as a municipal cultural centre, where Plethon taught philosopy. It is made up of two great churches: the first, dedicated to the saints Theodore (Agii Theodori), has a cruciform floorplan and dates from the late 13C. The dome, which rests on a tall sixteen-sided drum, is the most imposing feature. The Church of the Odigitria (or Afendiko), dedicated to the Virgin Mary Hodegetria ("she who shows the way") is decorated with remarkable 14C wall paintings.
