Built in 1204 to defend the mouth of the Vecht, from 1621 Muiden castle was home to the Muiderkring, an intellectual and literary circle formed around the poet P.C. Hooft (1581-1647). Today, the castle houses a collection of furniture, paintings, weapons and armour, making it an interesting museum for all ages. Outside, the historic gardens provide a backdrop for theatre performances and falconry displays.
