The heyday of the huge Lycian city of Pinara was during the 5C BCE. The tumbling hillsides are covered with gorse and riddled by steep footpaths. The site's magnificent location and the visit to the necropolis of rock tombs, cut into the vertiginous cliff-face, are particularly moving. Over 10,000 tombs are aligned in tight rows. In the royal cemetery, another collection of beautiful tombs has been hollowed out. The Roman baths and temple are also well worth a visit.
