Around 200 000 people were held in the concentration camp or its 49 subsidiary camps. Over 100 000 of them died there. The baracks and torture rooms evoke the suffering and death that reigned here from 1938 to 5 May 1945. One of the buildings has been turned into a mueum, presenting photos and documents. Outside the oppressively heavy surrounding wall there are monuments to the dead, erected by the countries whose people perished here.
