Out of Mausoleo, the D963, laid out in the pine forest half-way up, climbs above the gorges carved by the Tartagine and its tributary, the Melaja, before heading into secluded and unspoiled forest. On foot, as you skirt the Tartagine, you will come across pools of water where you can refresh yourself, then, among evergreen oaks, chestnut and pine trees, you can wander freely, possibly catching a glimpse of the royal eagle or a bearded vulture, both of which are residents here.
