Running alongside the wild gorge, the panoramic Via Madonna delle Virtù skirts the rock on which the cathedral stands. It commands an impressive view of the sassi, natural caves and others carved out of the rock face by humans - a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The two main troglodyte parts of the old town are the almost entirely restored: Sasso Barisano to the north, and Sasso Caveoso to the south, which is home to the most important churches hewn out of the rock.
