The valley lies south of the village of Gmünd and runs to the threshold of the Hohe Tauern national park. Served by a spectacular 30km-long route incorporating nine bridges and seven tunnels, this valley is one of the most beautiful spots in Carinthia. Famed for the Kölnbrein dam (1 900m up), it also owes its renown to the variety of its lovely landscape. A protected nature reserve, it is perfect for walks against its backdrop of high mountains.
