The magnificent Mont Ventoux stands guard over the plain of the Comtat Venaissin and the Pays de Sault, affording one of the best views anywhere in Europe. At an altitude of 1 909m, its peak is often in the clouds, yet its slopes are carpeted in the verdant habitats of its forests, alternating with the mountain's characteristic snow-like bare limestone. A ribbon of mist envelops the peak in a pink hue at sunset. Mont Ventoux is best discovered slowly and on foot.
