Still preserved to the south of the town, these walls dominated by towers, shaded by trees and bordered by gardens, are among the charms of Maastricht. On the two sections which still exist, the path around the battlements commands fine views. Look out for the bronze statue of d'Artagnan, made in 2003 by Russian sculptor, Alexander Taratynov, to celebrate the 330th anniversary of the musketeer's death. The latter died here on 25 June 1673 during the victorious siege by Vauban.
