The former Luang Prabang royal palace was converted into a museum in 1976, following the abolition of the monarchy. At the entrance, the Ho Pra Bang houses the palladium of the city, a Buddha in gold, silver and bronze, 83cm high and weighing almost 50kg. The highlight of a visit here, the throne room, is covered with an incredible mirror glass mosaic on a red background illustrating folkloric tales from Laos as well as the country's ceremonies and customs. The private apartments of the royal family are located to the rear.
