Hampstead Heath was part of the grounds of Heath House Manor and was used by 18C washerwomen, who hung their clothes out there to dry. It has become a popular place for entertainment, especially during its large fairs, and its ponds and public parks attract swimmers and walkers. There are also a few cottages, Victorian houses and mythical pubs, such as the Bull and Bush, where Joshua Reynolds and Gainsborough used to drink, and the elegant Kenwood House.
