Almost nothing is left of the piazza that Inigo Jones designed based on those he had seen in Italy, except for the houses on the west side of Russell Street (rebuilt). The fine commercial building of Covent Garden Market saw its activities transferred to Nine Elms (near Vauxhall) in 1974, and replaced by retail outlets: shops, glass-roofed cafés, pubs with vaulted cellars and wine bars now occupy the old premises. Street artists perform in the area.
