Around 1650, the owner of the common fields to the west of Lincoln's Inn undertook to build houses on three sides. One of them, Lindsey House, remains today. It is thought to have been designed by the famous architect Inigo Jones. Several houses date from the Classical era, such as the Palladian-style buildings (from Palladio, a 16C Italian architect) at nos 57-58 dating from 1730, and Powis House (1777). Official buildings stand along the south side.
