Long known as the summer residence of the Bishops of London, then in 19C as «the orchard and vegetable garden North of the Thames», Fulham is an old village located opposite Putney, to which it is linked by Putney Bridge, the starting point for the famous Oxford and Cambridge boat race. Downstream from the bridge, Hurlingham House, an 18C residence, is the last of the properties that used to line the banks of the river. Since 1973, Fulham has been the home of Charing Cross Hospital.
