Benjamin Wyatt built this luxurious town residence 1825 for the Duke of York, the brother of George IV. It became the property of the Duke of Sutherland; Charles Barry redesigned the interior in 1858 and meticulously decorated it. The most remarkable parts are the great staircase by Barry which gives onto the great gallery where a ceiling painted by Guerchin for a Romanesque church has been incorporated. There is an attractive view of its south front from the Mall.
