In an old electric power station on the banks of the Thames, Tate Modern is one of the most important contemporary art museums internationally. Its success is down to its rich collection of 20C and 21C art, presented in a resolutely anti-academic manner, which makes for some striking visual moments. The Tate is also noteworthy as an industrial building that has been superbly converted by Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron. The museum was extended in 2016 by the New Tate Modern.
