Set in the old bishopric built on the site of the Tessé family mansion, the museum contains a rich collection of old paintings and archaeological artefacts. The Italian Primitives enjoy pride of place (Pietro Lorenzetti, Cosimo Roselli). The still life Arms and Armour (Willem Kalf, c 1645) is the centrepiece of the museum. The Egyptian collections include two sarcophagi from the 16C and 12C BC, and one room is dedicated to Scarron's Comic Novel.
