Ruins of the Ancient Greek colony of Emporion ("market") and the Roman town of Emporiae can be seen in this stunning location on the southern coast of the Gulf of Roses. This fine testament to Classical Mediterranean culture consists of three centres: the ancient town of Paliapolis, the new town of Neapolis, and the Roman town. The city was founded by the Phoenicians in c 600 BC. It fell into decline in the Middle Ages and into virtual oblivion following the Moorish invasion (8C).
