On leaving Amalienborg, Amaliegade leads to Churchill Park at the centre of which stands a former barracks, the Kastellet (18C), which comprises several rows of red-brick buildings and is surrounded by moats fringed with reeds and weeping willows. If you follow the bank, you come to the monumental Gefion Fountain, an illustration of a Danish myth of Copenhagen's origins. On the seafront, The Little Mermaid symbolises the whole city.
