An art museum for people who think they don't like art, this facility (1994, Gunnar Birkerts) entertains and challenges. Its collection features such modern artists as Chihuly, Diebenkorn, Hockney, Johns, Motherwell, Stella and Thiebaud, and photographers Mapplethorpe and Wegman. On the walls of Café Sebastienne is African-American artist Frederick James Brown's The History of Art (1994), a montage of 110 oil paintings that represent important movements in art through the ages. The museum is directly across the street from the acclaimed Kansas City Art Institute.
