The Great Meteoron Monastery, founded in 1356 by St Athanasius and enriched by St Ioasaph, is built on a broad platform of rock. In the centre is the catholicon, a church with a square cross plan and lateral apses. The frescoes were made by Theophanes the Cretan (16C). The sanctuary is the only original part of the church (1388) and has frescoes of saints dressed for battle; it is separated from the nave by an iconostasis with remarkable icons. The refectory (16C) is roofed with domes and houses icons and manuscripts.
