The huge cemetery that developed around the mosque houses the tombs of ordinary people as well as those of Ottoman dignitaries. The men's steles bear a turban or a fez and the women's are carved with flowers, ornaments that Atatürk was to forbid from 1926. The luxurious mausolea of Mehmet V and Mehmet Sokollu Pasha are also here. A walk through this park punctuated with forgotten steles, covered in lichen and overgrown with wild grasses, makes for an enchanting experience.
