This bleak moor was the scene of the end of the Jacobite uprising (1745) in a battle on 16 April 1746. Prince Charles Edward Stuart and his clan chiefs were defeated by the government troops, led by the Duke of Cumberland, whose cruelty earned him the sobriquet "Butcher Cumberland". The Visitor Centre has a presentation on the battle. The Old Leanach Cottage recreates an interior at the time of the battle.
