The triumphal arch guarding the entrance to the Maria-Theresien-Strasse is a reminder of the events of 1765. The Imperial family had come to Innsbruck in great pomp, to celebrate the wedding of Archduke Leopold with the Infanta of Spain, Marie-Louise. However, Emperor Franz I died suddenly during their stay, so the monument symbolically recalls wedding joy on the south side, with portraits of the Habsburgs, and the sadness of death on the north side, depicted by a woman in mourning.
