The distinctive Goldenes Dachl (Golden Roof) was grafted onto an ordinary Old Town building. The Imperial loggia, built for feasts and tournaments, dates from the reign of Maximillian I to symbolise the power of the Habsburgs. The Gothic structure was designed by Niklas Türing the Elder, but the decoration becomes increasingly sumptuous and Renaissance the closer it gets to the roof. Inside, the Goldenes Dachl Museum exhibits pieces that belonged to the Emperor, including his death mask.
