Historians have counted around 100 churches in the Ihlara canyon. Only ten of them are accessible and each one has been given an evocative name, such as the Scented Church, the Church under the Tree, the Church of Hyacinths and the Church of Snakes. Most have retained moving fragments of frescoes from the pre-Iconoclastic period. The best of these frescoes can be seen in the Church under the Tree, where a remarkable Ascension is painted in shades of yellow, green and orange.
