This fort built in the 16C with the proceeds of the sale of salt and the help of Spanish engineers, replaced the former Illyrian fortifications which dated from the Greek occupation. During the great Turkish onslaught of 1571, the local inhabitants found safe refuge within its walls. The most interesting part of the visit are the sinister dungeons and the view of the town and the Pakleni islands. The path climbing up the hill takes you past the gates to the old city.
