This region is the cradle of the Franconian Hohenzollerns, under whose impetus Prussia became a great European power in the 18C. However, barely half a century later the defeat and revolution that followed the First World War put an end to the Hohenzollern domination. The castle (schloss), built from 1850 is neo-Gothic in style. All that remains of the original castle is the Chapel of St Michael, which contains the oldest stained glass in Germany.
