Maximilian II of Bavaria built this castle between 1832 and 1836, on the original 12C feudal ruins. The fairy tale castle of Hohenschwangau is still furnished, lending it the feel of a genuine residence, although the Biedermeier furnishings do contrast rather strangely with the Gothic style of the rooms, popular at the time. Asian art is prominently represented, in keeping with the edifice's knightly ambience, further reinforced by the vast murals painted after drafts by Moritz von Schwind.
