The threatened "delta" region extends across the mouth of the Rhine, Meuse and Escaut and is home to a succession of islands and estuaries along the North Sea coast. Here, you can appreciate the technological challenges presented by the race against time by following the impressive road which passes the anti-storm surge barriers and runs along the area's dykes. The huge Eastern Escaut dam, as well as the Haringvliet, Volkerakdam and Brouwersdam dams, provide protection for the region's attractive small towns.
