This street is where the fire of 1842 broke out. It is lined with 17C and 18C merchants' houses that are now occupied by taverns. The warehouses with restored façades face the canal, Nikolaifleet, a picture-postcard snapshot of old Hamburg. The bridge, Hohe Brücke, spanning the canal commands a general view of these façades. Note the watermarks left by the floods of 1962 and 1976 on the walls.
