In 1902, Karl Ernst Osthaus, a manufacturer and patron, founded the Folkwang Museum on this site (these collections can now be seen in Essen). The Art Nouveau-style building designed by Henry Van der Velde now houses the Osthaus museum, which showcases major German Expressionist, Classical and contemporary works. Part of the 20C German art section (Kirchner, Nolde, Dix) is dedicated to the artist Christian Rohlfs, who worked in Hagen until his death in 1938.
