The charitable institutions open to the inhabitants of Haarlem from the 15C onwards included the Hofje van Oorschot, on Kruisstraat, with its lavender garden, Proveniershofje (1592), whose large porch opens onto the Grote Houtstraat, Brouwershofje (1472), at no 8 Tuchthuisstraat, and Hofje van Loo, dating back to 1489, which can be seen at no 7 Barrevoetestraat.
