The Mátra mountain range, to the east of the Danube in Upper Hungary, rarely exceeds 1 000m in altitude, apart from at its highest peak, the Kékesteto (1 014m). A central road, running from Parád and Galyateto to Gyöngyös, crosses the range, making travel easy here. Splendid beech groves cover the whole of the Mátra. At 340m, the Mátrafüred spa resort is very popular in winter as well as in summer.
