One of the richest and most important museums in Germany, the Staedel was founded in 1815 thanks to a banker from Frankfurt, Johann Friedrich Staedel, who bequeathed his art collection to the city. The museum has continued to add to its impressive collection ever since, and regularly houses excellent temporary exhibitions. It is also home to superb works by many of the Old Masters, while the modern art section includes numerous exhibits by Europe's greatest artists. The basement is dedicated to contemporary art.
