The election of emperors (from 1356), followed by their coronation (from 1562) took place in this church, which earned it the title of cathedral. It was built between the 13C and 15C and the west tower was only completed in 1877. Inside, see in particular the Wahlkapelle - a chapel from the first half of the 15C, where the seven prince-electors of the Holy Roman Empire made their final choice, and also the modern altar (1993), at the transept crossing, which marks the historical position of coronations.
