This rotating boat lift is a world first. Since 2002 it has linked the Forth and Clyde Canal to the Union Canal, and has turned this stretch of waterway into a tourist attraction. From a distance it looks as though a giant can-opener has been dropped into the landscape. On either side of its helical structure, two caissons transport craft and 300t each of water with minimal use of energy. An interesting experience as a boat-user; the best view of the structure is from the Union Canal.
