Eleusis is home to the sparse ruins of the Sanctuary of Demeter. In Antiquity, this key religious site attracted countless pilgrims from all over the Greek world to take part in the initiation rites of Eleusis, the famous Mysteries, which celebrated the return to earth, six months a year, of Persephone, Demeter's daughter, kidnapped by Hades, god of the underworld, who made her his wife.
