In the centre of Edam, the Damplein (main square) has been raised to span the Voorhaven canal to allow boats to pass. The 18C town hall (Stadhuis) is crowned by a belfry and hosts temporary exhibitions from the museum next door, the Edams Museum. The latter, occupying a pretty house (c. 1530), is home to a floating cellar, which is extremely rare in the Netherlands. Its display of exhibits highlights the life of wealthy merchants in centuries past.
