Hewn from the pleasant agricultural land of the Fife, the dark rooms and corridors of this secret place recall the menacing era of the Cold War. The bunker was part o a line of surveillance posts built on the eastern coast of the British Isles before becoming an atomic bomb shelter. As a regional headquarters of the government, it was intended to run the country after an atomic holocaust. The Soviet menace having disappeared, it was opened to the public in 1994.
