The second largest forest in France, the Forêt de Chaux stretches over more than 20 000ha to the east of Dole, between the Doubs and the Loue. The seven famous columns, by the architect Guidon in 1826, stand at each of the main crossroads. Don't miss the village of La Vieille-Loye with its "Baraques du 14", former woodcutters' dwellings, the Joseph Martin Pottery Museum in Étrepigney, and the enchanting Grottes d'Osselle in Courtefontaine, caves in the cliffs overlooking the Doubs.
