A windswept desert island, once the site of the Aegean's greatest ancient city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site: this is Delos, the home of Apollo, god of beauty and light. In ancient times, the island played a leading commercial and religious role: the whole of the Greek world came through here. As well as the Temple of Apollo, be sure to see the Terrace of the Lions and the theatre district (3C BC), its houses with mosaics in lively colours. The island is easily reached year round... but has no accommodation.
