This 56-room Ohio-limestone, English-style residence with a crenellated roofline and a turret set the opulent standard for auto baron mansions. Built in 1915 for automobile magnate Henry Ford and his wife, Clara, the house is decorated with mahogany panelling, silver chandeliers and hand-carved woodwork. A tunnel containing some 56.3km of pipes connects the house to a powerhouse to make Fair Lane self-sufficient energy-wise. The grounds, designed by Jens Jensen, remain open during the renovation works.
