Oviedo lagoon is particularly suited to the observation of water birds. The undergrowth and mangroves provide shelter, from which you can watch herons, pelicans and pink flamingos. Each of the lagoon's 24 islands provides sanctuary to a different species. Cayo Iguana is home to rhinoceros and Ricord iguanas. In season, Carey, Verde, Caguama and Tinglar turtles, four protected species, lay their eggs on the beaches. A high watchtower has been erected, providing a wonderful panorama of the whole lagoon.
