The National Art Gallery has been established in a Baroque palace (1774-1785), one of Transylvania's finest, built by a German architect for the Bánffy family. The collection includes works by Romanian painters Nicolae Grigorescu, Cluj-born Ion Andreescu, Stefan Luchian, Nicolae Tonitza, Theodor Pallady. Certain striking pieces merit a visit in their own right: the fine Jimbor Saxon altarpiece (16C) and Maramures wood icons.
