The town of Chimæra was one of the haunts of the mythological monster of the same name. The natural phenomenon of methane flames which appeared here and there among the rocks stimulated the imagination throughout Antiquity. A large temple razed to the ground and the ruins of a fountain are all that remain of Greek and Roman Chimæra, while the ruins of a basilica recall the Byzantine period.
