The Santuario de Chimayo, a Spanish adobe church, is a very important pilgrimage site. Some 30 000 pilgrims walk here every Good Friday in order to collect soil that is believed to be holy and to possess healing powers. The chapel, touchingly simple, houses sacred altarpieces and painted wooden statues. To the left of the altar is a small door leading to an anti-chamber full of the crutches of the sick, as well as and ex-votos bearing the wishes of pilgrims.
