This is the third church building to serve St Michael's parish since its formation in 1852. When fire destroyed almost all of the second building, which had been completed in 1869, parishioners rallied to rebuild the interior in just a year's time. The bell tower was added in 1888, and in 1913 a 2.5m statue of St Michael was placed in a niche at the top of the façade. The church's ornate Bavarian Baroque interior is the result of several years of renovation.
