Built by Katherine Bohier, remodelled by Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Medici, preserved by Louise de Lorraine, and rescued by Mme Dupin, Chenonceau is fully worthy of its sobriquet, Château des Dames! Famous men (such as Murillo, Tintoretto and Rubens) have left their mark too in the interior decoration. Don't miss the Green study, Great Gallery with chequered floor overlooking the Cher, François I's chamber with its fine fireplace and, of course, the gardens.
