Philippe Lebon (1767-1804) was the inventor of gas lighting. It is understandable therefore that the people of Chaumont should recognise this by erecting a statue in the centre of the square that bears his name. From here, enjoy an attractive view over the rooftops of the town, the keep, the ramparts, the towers of St John the Baptist basilica, the bell tower of the Jesuit chapel and the small dome of the town hall.
